Introduction
When considering the classification of pelvic pain, it is important to appreciate that the pain may be associated with a specific disease process of an organ or organs (Specific Disease Associated Pelvic Pain) but it may also occur in the absence of classical end-organ pathology (Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome) (Fall et al. 2010; Baranowski et al. 2008b). When we are dealing with specific disease associated pelvic pain, there may be certain obvious differences between the male and female as a result of different anatomy and physiology, and this may result in sex-specific pathophysiology (Fillingim et al. 2009). However, when we are dealing with the chronic pain syndromes many of the mechanisms will be similar in both sexes (Giamberardino et al. 2010; Giamberardino et al. 2001).
