Age-related changes of human seeing abilities

Definition

Aging of the human eye and its influence on seeing abilities with regard to brightness, color, spatial resolution (visual acuity and legibility), visual field, and glare.

Senescent Changes in the Visual Organ

Visual information accounts for about 70% or 80% of sensory information in human beings. Like other sensory organs, human vision has senescent changes for most of the parts in the visual system, and these make quality of seeing degraded to older people.

Figure 1shows a simple sketch of human eye together with major structural changes with age that affect perception of vision. Light from the external world enters into the eye through the lens and reaches onto the retina that covers the back of the eyeball. Two age-related changes occur at the lens; one is loss of elasticity and the other one yellowing and clouding of the lens.
