Definition
Until the 1980s, “carcinomatosis” was a condition typically characterized by widespread dissemination of malignant metastases throughout the body. It was then used to describe conditions with more limited spread as in “leptomeningeal carcinomatosis,” “lymphangitic carcinomatosis” (which is diffuse malignant infiltration of the lungs with obstruction of the lymphatic channels that occurs most commonly in patients with carcinoma of the breast, lung, stomach, pancreas, prostate, cervix, or thyroid, as well as in patients with metastatic adenocarcinoma from an unknown primary site), and “peritoneal carcinomatosis.” Since 2000, due to the worldwide diffusion of cytoreductive surgery combined with intra-abdominal chemotherapy, “carcinomatosis” is a word now describing tumoral spreading within the peritoneal cavity.
