Definition
REST stands for RE1-silencing transcription factor and its gene localizes on human chromosome 4q12. REST is a Kruppel-type zinc finger protein, encoded by RESTgene. REST mediates gene repression through binding a DNA sequence motif by recruiting the multiple proteins. The motif that REST binds is called repressor element 1 (RE1) or neuron restrictive silencing element (NRSE). Several thousands of RE1 motifs are reported to regulate hundreds of genes. One group reported that transcription factor named NRSF (neuron-restrictive silencer transcription factor) represses the expression of SCG10 through NRSE element. Another group cloned independently transcriptional repressor REST from a HeLa cell cDNA library. REST is a transcriptional repressor which silences neuronal genes predominantly expressed in nonneuronal cells. REST was originally identified as a master transcriptional repressor of a...
