Definition
Resistin is a cysteine-rich peptide hormone that was isolated from adipose tissues and that has been found to link obesity to type II diabetes in rodents. The name resistin stands for “resistance to insulin” because it reduces the sensitivity of target tissues to insulin.
Characteristics
The Discovery
Resistin was discovered by two different groups. The gene homologue of resistin was initially found in normal mouse lung and in human bone marrow. In mice, resistin mRNA is primarily expressed in white adipose tissue in mesentery and adjacent to the thyroid gland and trachea of mice.
