Definition

Diagnosis of renal cancer is primarily based on imaging studies. Today, most tumors are detected by ultrasound of asymptomatic patients. No tumor marker for renal cancer is currently established. The staging of renal cancer aims to determine the size and possible local or distant spread. Although renal biopsy can be performed, most patients with a renal mass will undergo surgical exploration. Histopathology of the excised tumor or removed tumor-bearing kidney will determine tumor stage and histologic subtype. In metastatic disease, imaging studies document size and localization of metastasis before systemic therapy. Follow-up studies will determine possible therapy responders.

Characteristics
