Definition
The zonula occludens (ZO-1) protein-1 is a membrane-associated component of both tight junctions (TJs) and adherens junctions (AJs) found at the site of cell-cell contact. Functionally, ZO-1 is an intracellular adaptor protein and is known to interact with claudins, occludin, cadherins, actin cytoskeleton, and downstream signaling pathways and transcription factors (such as ZONAB).
Characteristics
In order for organs to perform their diverse functions, the constituent cells that make up a tissue must be able to arrange themselves in an organized fashion. The complex architecture of a given tissue is regulated by the differential expression of cell-cell adhesion molecules.
