Definition
Member of the group of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Benzopyrenes are present in coal tar at low levels and are considered carcinogenic (cancer-inducing). Traces of benzopyrenes are present in wood smoke, and this has given rise to some concern about the safety of naturally smoked foods.
