Definition

Refers to the two-step process of delivering a gene to tumor cells that is able to transform a nontoxic prodrug into a toxic metabolite and thus killing the cells. Transfer of a gene which, when expressed in cells, activates a normally nontoxic prodrug to a toxic form.
