Definition

Salivary gland malignancies (SGMs) are a group of clinically diverse cancers. Malignant salivary gland tumors are rare, with an estimated global annual incidence of 1.36 per 100,000 persons and an estimated annual incidence of 0.9 per 100,000 persons in the United States (Sunwoo et al. 2015). Because of their rarity and heterogeneity, SGMs pose a major diagnostic and therapeutic challenge to the head and neck oncologist.

Epidemiology

The newly released World Health Organization (WHO) 2017 Classification of Tumors recognizes 20 distinct primary SGMs (El-Naggar et al. 2017). There are a few notable changes in the new classification system, including the addition of secretory carcinoma, previously known as mammary analog secretory carcinoma (MASC), formally changing the name of polymorphous low-grade adenocarcinoma (PLGA) to polymorphous adenocarcinoma (PA), and categorizing sialoblastoma as a malignant tumor with unknown malignant potential.
