Bone disorder characterized by a lowered bone mineral density, due to which the bone is more susceptible to fractures. An important factor in osteoporosis etiology lies in estrogen deficiency following menopause. Imbalance between bone resorption by osteoclasts and by osteoblasts is the underlying mechanism.
