Definition

Familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) is a dominant condition predisposing to the development of multiple colorectal adenomas (polyps) during adolescence. Adenomatous polyps are benign tumors that can degenerate into malignant adenocarcinomas and subsequently into metastases if the affected segment of the bowel is not surgically resected (Fig. 1a, b).
