KSP mitotic spindle motor protein is a microtubule-associated molecular motor belonging to the kinesin superfamily, which plays an essential role in the separation of centrosomes, the assembly of bipolar spindles, and the faithful segregation of chromosomes into daughter cells during mitosis.


KSP is a plus-end-directed microtubule motor protein, well conserved from yeast to mammals. It can generate directed mechanical force by hydrolyzing ATP and move along microtubule filaments from the minus end (oriented towards the nucleus) to the plus end (oriented towards the cell periphery). The KSP protein contains a highly conserved N-terminal motor domain encompassing the head and neck motifs, a coiled-coil stalk domain, and a tail region containing a characteristic BimC box close to the C-terminus.
