Carl Woese was an American microbiologist, born in New York in 1928. In 1977, he discovered the third lineage among the living beings, the Archaeas, which are microscopical entities, beside eukaryotes and prokaryotes. This discovery was based on the comparison of RNA sequences, showing that Archaea are no more close to prokaryotes than to eukaryotes.

This discovery constituted a fundamental transformation of the conception of the microscopical world and of the classification of living beings.
