DNA polymerase is an enzyme which catalyzes the addition of a deoxynucleoside triphosphate to the 3′ end of a DNA strand using a template. The systematic name of this enzymatic activity is deoxynucleoside-triphosphate:DNA deoxynucleotidyl transferase and the catalyzed reaction can be represented as
$$ \mathrm{Deoxynucleoside}\ \mathrm{triphosphate}+{\mathrm{DNA}}_n=\mathrm{diphosphate}+{\mathrm{DNA}}_{n+1} $$
