An endothermic reaction is a physical transformation which requires an energy supply if it takes place at constant volume or which requires an enthalpy supply if it takes place at constant pressure. A familiar endothermic physical transformation is the evaporation of water. The enthalpy change (ΔH) or the energy change (ΔU) during an endothermic reaction or transformation is positive by definition.
