Cofactor is a nonprotein (organic or inorganic) factor necessary for the activity of an enzyme. This factor can be firmly bound to the enzyme (i.e., prosthetic group, e.g., cytochromes) or freely dissociable (i.e., coenzyme, e.g., NAD(P)H).
