Definition

The molecule diacetylene is the simplest polyyne, which is a hydrocarbon with alternating single and triple bonds; thus, diacetylene has the formula HC≡C-C≡CH. Diacetylene is found as a minor component in the atmospheres of the giant planets, including Jupiter, Saturn, and Neptune, and in that of Saturn’s satellite Titan. In addition, it can be present in circumstellar environments, for example, in the envelope of the protoplanetary nebula CRL 618 (Cernicharo et al. 2001).
