Definition

In 1984, the Deutsche Agentur für Raumfahrtangelegenheiten (DARA) – German Aerospace Agency – was created. It was commissioned to oversee the planning and coordination of state-funded German aerospace initiatives and to represent Germany at meetings of international bodies. In the same year the DFVLR is renamed the Deutsche Forschungsanstalt für Luft-und Raumfahrt (DLR) – the German Aerospace Center. The present DLR was established in 1997 by the amalgamation of these two bodies, which henceforth will be called the Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt – German Aerospace Center. Within all these years, Germany was able to implement more than 100 space missions both nationally and within the framework of international cooperation.

The space activities include Germany’s national space program, DLR’s “space” research and development program, and Germany’s contributions to the European Space Agency (ESA)as well as the European Organization...
