Definition
In biochemistry, a transferase is an enzyme or ribozyme that catalyzes the transfer of a chemical group (e.g., an acetyl, methyl, amino, or phosphate group) from one molecule, the donor, to another, the acceptor. There are more than 450 known protein enzyme classes that catalyze the transfer of various chemical groups from one compound to another. For example, transaminases catalyze the transfer of an amino group from an amino acid to an a-keto acid.
