Genetics sense. Transduction is a virus-mediated transfer of DNA from one cell to another. Although transduction was first observed in bacteriophages and bacteria, it has also been observed in retroviruses and eukaryotic cells.

Bioenergetics sense. Transduction refers to any of the diverse mechanisms of conversion between different types of energy, for example, from chemical to mechanical (cell motility), from electromagnetic to chemical (Photosynthesis), or from chemical to osmotic (ion pumps).
- 3.
Cell regulation sense. Transduction refers to any of the diverse processes of conversion of information based on the use of chemical signals, for example, the hormone-mediated generation of a second messenger and its effects on metabolic flux regulation.
