Definition
The solar luminosity is defined as the total power emitted by the Sun in the form of electromagnetic radiation. The currently accepted value is 3.839 × 1026 W. This is the most common unit used to express the luminosities of other stars or bigger objects such as galaxies or clusters of galaxies. Note that the Sun is a weakly variable star, with its luminosity fluctuating periodically by about a part in a thousand over the 11-year solar (sunspot) cycle.
