Definition
An unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual and potential tissue damage or described in terms of such damage.
Classification
Painful conditions can give rise to emotional sequelae, particularly anxiety and depression. Psychological factors also affect the severity of painful feelings and often prolong pain. In DSM-IV, people with painful symptoms of this nature were diagnosed as having a somatoform disorder that was termed pain disorder associated with psychological factors, with or without an associated medical condition.
In DSM-5, somatoform disorders are called somatic symptom and related disorders and pain disorder has been deleted. In this new classification, people with chronic pain can be diagnosed as having somatic symptom disorder (SSD) with predominant pain, with psychological factors that affect other medical conditions, or, on rare occasions, with an adjustment disorder.
