This term describes fully developed muscle fibers, where bradyzoite-containing Toxoplasma gondii cysts are developed after invasion of tachyzoites. This development was correlated with the up-regulation of the negative cell cycle regulators

testis-specific Y-encoded-like protein 2 (Tspyl2) and

p21 (waf1Cip1)
as well as is connected with the down-regulation of the cell cycle activator cyclin B1 and with absence of DNA synthesis. Following a penetration of tachyzoites of T. gondii, myotubes (but not their progenitors: myoblasts or fibroblasts) further upregulate Tspyl2.
