These species belong to the family of Capsalidae among the Monogenea (= member of Trematodes in the phylum Plathelminthes). All members of the genus Neobenedenia are a threat to the aquaculture industry of fishes as some species have become responsible of epizootic events inducing severe losses in more than 100 species of cultured teleost fish species. The killing effects are due to a direct life cycle, short generation time, and filamentous eggs, leading to numerous parasites “grazing” on the epithelial cells of their hosts, which suffer from inflammations, dermal ulcerations, and bacterial secondary infections.
