Name
Latin: sphericus = spherical; Greek: stoma = mouth.
These trematodes (which reach a length of only 4–5 mm) live in the intestine of fresh water fish (carp, perch, eel, and pike). Their first intermediate hosts are water snails (e.g., Bulimus species), and second intermediate hosts are leeches (Herpobdella sp.). Since these trematodes mainly feed fluid contents of the intestine, damages are rare or absent. Treatment – if necessary, depending on the amount of excreted eggs (76 × 60 μm) – can be done by Tremazol® (praziquantel in fluid formulation, Fa. Alpha- Biocare, Düsseldorf).
