Western equine encephalitis virus. This virus was first found in the western regions of the USA and leads to an encephalitis in horses and humans. Today this virus is found in western USA, whole Central America, and all central and northern states of South America. It is transmitted by Culex tarsalis mosquitoes and may use rabbits/hares as hosts, too.
