Bloodstream stages of Trypanosoma brucei show a massively increased endocytic activity compared to their stages in the midgut of their vectors ( Glossina species). This allows them to recycle rapidly their variant glycoproteins and to clear host’s antibodies from their surface. Since it has been recently shown that the trypanocidal drug suramin is quickly taken by help of the invariant surface glycoprotein 75 and that the trypanosome lytic factor 1 is internalized by help of the haptoglobin-hemoglobin receptor, further control approaches seem worthwhile to use the receptor-mediated endocytis pathway of the parasite.
