Strongylus Species of Equids

Greek: strongylus = rounded; Latin: edentatus = without teeth; vulgaris = common, normal; equinus = belonging to horses; asinus = donkey

Geographic Distribution/Epidemiology

Worldwide; however, S. asini was only recorded in Africa, Asia, and South America.

Morphology/Life Cycle

This group encloses four main species:
  1. (a)

    Strongylus asini: Females, 3–4.2 cm; males, 1.8–3.3 cm; they possess two ear-like teeth at the base of the mouth capsule. Eggs, 75 × 45 μm.

  2. (b)

    Strongylus edentatus: Females, 2.8–4.4 cm; males, 1.9–2.8 cm. No teeth at the base of the mouth capsule (Fig. 1). Eggs, 64 − 99 × 40 − 57 μm.

  3. (c)

    Strongylus equinus: Females, 3.5–5 cm; males, 2.4–3.5 cm. Two subventral teeth and one dorsal tooth (with a divided tip) at the base of the mouth capsule (Fig. 1). Eggs, 70 − 90 × 40 − 55 μm.

  4. (d)

    Strongylus vulgaris: Females, 1.3–2.5 cm; males, 1–1.9 cm; two ear-like teeth at the base of the mouth capsule (Figs. 1 and 2). Eggs, 74 − 95 × 36 − 58 μm.
