This term describes the number of bites by mosquitoes infected by Plasmodium (or by other agents of diseases) in a defined period (usually per year or per period of mosquito activity). Thereby the infection risk is calculated for local people and foreigners entering an endemic region. For example, about 700 bites of infected mosquitoes per year would lead to a 90 % chance to get malaria.
