D. klebanovski and D. nihonkaiense are described in East Asian countries. D. dendriticum occurs in Europe, parasitizes in freshwater fish and in humans and D. pacificum is found in South America (especially common in Chile and Peru). The life cycle of these species is very similar to that of Diphyllobothrium latum.
