Genus of echinostomatid trematodes, which are characterized by typical 27 spines in the cephalic region. They parasitize aquatic birds (mainly cormorants) on the American continent. Intermediate hosts are planorbid snails (Planorbella trivolvis) and, e.g., channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) in North America. In South America (Brazil) occurs, e.g., D. spathans in Phalachro corax brasilianus, while snails of the species Biomphalaria straminea act as first intermediate host. Since the cercariae of Drepanocephalus sp. are provided with 27 spines like those of the species of the genus Paryphostomum, species diagnosis on the level of morphological features of the cercariae is difficult.
