Genus of the superfamily Filariodea of nematodes. Their unsheathed microfilariae, which are found in the blood of birds, measure about 120–200 μm in length. They were transmitted by blood sucking Culex species. The adults live in the body cavity of their final host. A. carinii is found in passerine birds (e.g., Paroaria coronata) inside the body cavity as well as in the large intestine. See Filarial worms of animals.
