Greek: anoplos = unarmed, kephale = head; Latin: foliatus = with leaves; magna = large, big; deminuere = making smaller; Greek: gigantos = giant; Latin: gorilla = monkey; latissimus = largest; mammilatus = with nipples; rhodesiensis = from Rhodesia = today Zimbabwe.

Morphology/Life Cycle

The different species of the Anoplocephala have different host preferences:
  • A. diminuta: rhinoceros, India

  • A. gigantea: rhinoceros, Africa

  • A. gorillae: monkeys, Africa

  • A. latissima: rhinoceros, Asia

  • A. magna: horses and related species, worldwide

  • A. manubriata: elephants, India, Africa

  • A. mamillana: horses, worldwide

  • A. perfoliata: horses and related species, worldwide

  • A. rhodesiensis: elephants, horses, and related groups, Africa, worldwide

Most of the adults are short and reach only a length of up to 4 cm, while, e.g., A. perfoliata measures 25 cm, but shrinks in feces to 5 cm. A. magna, A. latissima, and A. giganteameasure up to 1 m in length....
