Disease due to infections with the porcine ciliate Balantidium coli via oral uptake of cysts from feces.

Main Clinical Symptoms

Diarrhoea, nausea, obstipation.

Incubation Period

Days to weeks.

Prepatent Period

4 days to weeks.

Patent Period

Years.

Diagnosis

Microscopic determination of cysts and trophozoites in fecal smears (Fig. 1).
