General Information
In swine, coccidia (order Eimeriida, family Eimeriidae) of the genera Eimeria and Cystoisospora (syn. Isospora) parasitize the intestinal tissue. While the taxonomy of the genus Eimeria is unequivocal, debates are being raised over the naming of the genus Isospora, and it was recently suggested to name all species that occur in mammals as Cystoisospora (Barta et al. 2005). Consequently, both names are found in literature as synonyms.
Currently eight species of Eimeria and one of Cystoisospora are described in swine (Table 1) which are all highly host specific and distributed worldwide in both farmed pigs and wild boar. The prevalences depend on the age group and the management conditions for the examined animals.
