This fly family includes species, which are mid-sized (e.g., Scatophaga stercoraria, 5–10 mm in length), covered by brownish or golden appearing hair and depone their eggs often at human feces. Therefore they become often vectors of human agents of diseases. They occur in the regions of the Palaearctic. Similar species are Chaetosa punctipes (Europe, North Asia, Eastern North America), Norellia nervosa (Central Europe), Cordilura puberba (Westeurope until Sibiria), and C. albipes (Europe).
