Name
The genus name honors the English scientist Patrick Manson (1844–1922). The species names are based on the following terms: Latin: perstare = persist; Greek: streptos = coiled; kerkos = tail. The English trivial names are M. perstans = American body cavity filaria; M. ozzardi = American connective tissue filaria; M. streptocerca = African skin filaria.
Geographic Distribution/Epidemiology
- (a)
M. ozzardi: New world, humid, warm regions of Mexico until North Argentina; several millions of human cases.
- (b)
M. perstans: Humid warm regions in West and Central Africa, focally on islands of the Caribbean Sea and in many countries of South and Central America. At least 40–50 millions of humans are infected.
- (c)
M. streptocerca: Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon, and countries of the Congo Basin. Many hundred thousands of humans are infected.
