Centrifugal microfluidic technologies have significantly advanced in both industry and academia over the last decades. While initial focus was directed towards implementing individual laboratory unit operations (LUOs), such as metering and mixing, now their system integration into “sample-to-answer” platforms for point-of-care diagnostics and environmental monitoring has attracted significant attention. Flow control and automation of these “lab-on-a-disc” (LoaD) platforms is primarily enabled by normally closed 1-way valving schemes. On the one hand, these valves need to withstand the rotational ramps to keep pre-stored liquid reagents at bay until they are required in the assay protocol. Furthermore, these valves need to stop the flow during the typically batch-mode-operated LUOs.
