Definition

Most of the microfluidic systems have prominent three-dimensional effects due to the complexity in the channel geometry and wall effects. The flow characterization of these systems demands appropriate diagnostic techniques. Traditionally, micro-PIV and confocal-PIV systems are used for the measurement of three-dimensional flow field in microsystems. However, these techniques are expensive and do not provide complete 3D velocity field at any specific time instants. Micro-holographic PIV/PTV is another potential alternative technique, which offers superior capabilities with lesser cost. This entry reviews this technique for application in microfluidic systems.
