Definition
Water-miscible cutting fluids are used for machining processes where the need for cooling is greater than the need for lubrication. These products form, when added to water, an emulsion that can be either milky or transparent, depending on the amount of oil and additives incorporated in the individual formulation.
By volume this is the most significant group of metalworking fluids all over the world. Mainly in Japan, the consumption of neat oils is much higher than in other regions; here for removal fluids the relation neat oils versus water-mixed coolants is approximately 58 % neat oil and 42 % water-mixed coolants. In the USA we can observe that approx. 80 % of removal fluids are used as water-mixed coolants and only 20 % are used as neat oils [1].
