Definition
A quasi-continuous measuring technique to determine the condition of lubricants.
Introduction
In the last decade, a number of companies and university institutions have been intensifying their research into sensors which enable continuous, online monitoring of the condition of oil. This research is being pushed forward by the automotive industry and suppliers of vehicle components, for example, who hope that it will offer a means of reliably stipulating vehicle-specific oil-change intervals, which have been extended considerably over the last few years. Interest in these sensors has also been increasing in other areas of industry, such as numerous stationary and mobile hydraulic applications.
While the use of oil condition sensors promises several ecological and economic benefits irrespective of the selected type of oil, such as saving the costs of oil and disposal and reducing machine downtimes and...

This entry describes the results of a 3-year cooperative project on oil condition monitoring with the focus on hydraulic fluids, involving the IFAS of the RWTH Aachen, lubricant manufacturer Fuchs Petrolub AG, and Wuppertal University. The work described in this entry was also supported by HKR Sensorsysteme. The project was supported by the German Ministry of Consumer Protection, Food and Agriculture and was therefore primarily concentrated on the use of renewable resources and their derivatives. However, the results indicate that there will be a broad spectrum of possible applications.
