Definition
Any metal forming lubricant must reduce friction and wear of the tooling and workpiece and, in the case where high forming temperature is an issue, dissipate heat. However, lubricants also affect and are influenced by numerous other processes within the production chain. Like the forming operation itself, both upstream and postprocess operations have to be taken into account. This entry reviews the requirements, the types of lubricants, and their application as well as newer developments in the field of sheet metal forming lubrication.
Introduction to Sheet Metal-Forming Lubricants
Apart from friction and wear reduction, and dissipation of heat, lubricants also affect a number of other processes such as:
Tool and coating life
Press and die maintenance
Aspect and part inspection
Corrosion protection
Joining (welding, soldering, bonding, clinching)
...
