Open control system

Definition

Open architecture is a hardware or software design that allows adding or changing single components without changing other components. These components are connected over a basic platform (Fig. 1). The “Technical Committee of Open Systems” of IEEE defines an open system as follows (Pritschow et al. 1997): “An open system provides capabilities that enable properly implemented applications to run on a variety of platforms from multiple vendors, interoperate with other system applications and present a consistent style of interaction with the user” (IEEE 1003.0).
