Definition

Wear mechanisms result from mechanical, thermal, or chemical loading. Cutting tools are exposed to a combination of these wear causes. These causes determine the wear phenomena. The functional chain can be stated as follows:
$$ \mathrm{Loading}\to \mathrm{wear}\ \mathrm{mechanism}\to \mathrm{wear}\ \mathrm{phenomenon} $$
