Cutting fluids, or coolants, are media used to facilitate machining operations. Their function is mainly resulted from the action to cool and lubricate the vicinity of cutting zones. The term “coolant” is often employed if the cooling action of the media is more important, whereas the term “cutting fluid” applies to rather general cases.

Theory and Application

Action Mechanism of Cutting Fluids

Cutting fluids and coolants are used in order to elongate tool life by restraining tool wear, to reduce cutting resistance, to provide a fine surface finish, and to improve machining accuracy. At higher cutting speeds, since the tool suffers from wear because of sufficiently raised temperature to cause thermal softening, their cooling action is more important.
