Definition

Refer to the female sex steroid hormones 17β-estradiol and progesterone, secreted by the ovary and by the placenta during pregnancy. Steroid hormones are lipid molecules derived from a common cholesterol precursor (cholestane, C27). Based on the distance between the site of hormone synthesis and secretion and the target tissue, their mechanism of action can be classified as endocrine (distant target), paracrine (neighboring cells), or autocrine (same cell).
