Abstract

Primary tumors of the small intestine are considered rare, both for their relatively low incidence in relation to all tumors of the digestive tract, and in proportion to the vast surface of the small intestine mucosa itself (Good 1963). Certainly the small intestine has peculiar characteristics compared to the rest of the digestive tract (alkaline content, presence of lymphatic tissue in its wall, the ability to secrete IgA, particularly fast intestinal transit, particularly intense cell turnover of the mucosa), but the low incidence of tumors of the small intestine, as mentioned in literature, has never been clearly explained (Calman 1974). Instead, contrary to what is commonly thought, the small intestine is also the not rare site of secondary lesions from other tumors such as melanoma, breast cancer, or bronchogenic tumors (Hillenbrand et al. 2005).
