Definition

Maternal death: Death of a woman while pregnant or within 42 days of termination of pregnancy, irrespective of the duration and site of the pregnancy, from any cause related to or aggravated by the pregnancy or its management but not from accidental or incidental causes (WHO).

Puerperium: The time period up to 42 days postdelivery or abortion.

Organ dysfunction (synonym: organ failure): A score of equal to or greater than 3 points on the SOFA (Sequential Organ Failure Assessment) score for each organ system.

Chorioamnionitis: It is the inflammation of the amnion and/or chorion occurring prior to delivery.

Puerperal sepsis: The infection of the genital tract occurring at any time between the onset of the rupture of membranes or labor and the 42nd day postpartum in which fever and one or more of the following are present: pelvic pain, abnormal vaginal discharge, abnormal odor of discharge, and delay in the rate of reduction of the size of the uterus (WHO).
