Definition

From the Latin acus meaning needle and the verb pungere, to prick. It is the evaluation of the patient with subsequent insertion and manipulation of needles into the body for therapeutic purposes such as relief of pain or gastrointestinal complaints. This nontraditional or alternative practice is based on Chinese methods that predate modern Western techniques. Broadly, acupuncture may include electric acupuncture, laser acupuncture (photo-acupuncture), microsystem acupuncture (to the ear, face, hand, and scalp), acupressure, and traditional body needling.
